What is Vitamin E?Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be found in several forms, however, alpha-tocopherol is the only form that is readily used by the human body. Vitamin E is exclusively obtained from the diet, as our bodies are unable to produce it. It is present in a variety of foods, including plant oils (such as rapeseed, olive, sunflower and soya oils), nuts, seeds and cereals. Once absorbed, it is stored in the liver. The functions of Vitamin E have received significant interest from scientists all over the world. Back in 1922, scientists Katherine Bishop and Herbert Evans examined the effect of various dietary factors on the growth and development in animals. Apart from vitamins A, B, C, and D, which were already known to have an impact on health, they discovered a separate compound, which they first referred to as factor X. This new factor was found to be essential for the reproduction in rats, and seemed to be present in butterfat, lettuce, and different plant-based oils. Factor X was later given the name ?-tocopherol, from the Greek words ?tokos?, meaning ?childbirth? and ?phero?, meaning ?to bear?. What are the benefits of Vitamin E?Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs in the body when there is an excess of free radicals (highly reactive molecules) over antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent oxidative damage by ?donating? electrons to free radicals, so they become more stable.
