Although there are not enough studies on the toxicity of maca, secular consumption as food in Peru is indicative of its low toxicity. On the other hand, in clinical trials in which 3 g of dried maca root were administered daily, over a period of 12 weeks, no side effects were reported. In case of pregnancy and lactation its use is not recommended due to the absence of safety data in these circumstances. Due to its vitamin K content, it could decrease the efficacy of anticoagulant drugs. It is recommended not to administer together with active drugs on the CNS, because, in experimental animals, maca showed a stimulating effect. Although it has not been shown to modify testosterone and estradiol levels, caution is recommended in case of hormone-dependent malignancies, as well as in women undergoing contraceptive therapy.
