The DDR were drawn with West Germany, with their game determining who won the group. East Germany beat West Germany in the only tournament match between the countries. However, East Germany had the tougher draw in the next round, losing to Brazil and Netherlands and exiting. West Germany went on to beat Netherlands in the Final to win their second World Cup.
