Position: Full sun or partial shade Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil Rate of growth: Fast Flowering period: April to May Hardiness: Fully hardy Bursting with vigour, 'Spring Joy' is a robust climber showering gardens with fragrant, upward-facing white blooms, 6cm (2.5in) across, from late spring to early summer and flaunting lush green leaves divided into three oval-shaped leaflets. A montana hybrid, this deciduous Clematis is an elegant solution to clothing partially shaded walls and arches. Garden care: Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
