This jack-of-all-trades is a painter, sculptor and architect. He has taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Particularly symbolic, David Cesaria's works are pop icons of an irreverent world, where reflection on important subjects is combined with the lightness of life. The artist observes and interprets everyday obsessions. He reports more than he condemns, creating highly attractive works which, in the communicative power of symbols, place their true expressive force. His luminaries speak of Puglia, his home region, with which David feels a complicated bond of hate-love, an ambiguous relationship that, in his works, translates into the contrast between creative and destructive force, rational and irrational. David works in a perpetual balance between humor and tragedy, joke and provocation, the familiar and the disturbing. He jokes about taboos and respectability, investigates commonplaces and challenges obvious reasoning. Resembling sketches, the Hotlight Wall lights feature hollowed-out White wooden forms haloed by multiple colored bulbs. Flying penises, pills, sensual lips and biceps stigmatize our obsessions and frailties. Playful and light-hearted though they may be, these works address issues that touch on many aspects of the uncertainty and unease of everyday life. The Hotlight Wall lights evoke the festive, dreamlike light decorations of the Luminarie, the traditional festivals of southern Italy, when village streets are filled with gigantic white wooden structures embellished with a thousand and one lights. Hotlight Wall lights evoke the popular tradition of Southern Italian illuminations, but revisited with an American neo-pop aesthetic. Halfway between Puglia tradition and Las Vegas atmosphere, these luminous sculptures plunge us into an imaginary world of popular superstitions and contemporary obsessions.
