This Turk is an elaborately painted figure of light, standing on a base covered with a carpet. His right-hand holds a pipe, in his left hand, he carries a candle. Recommend not to light the candles, but to use them only as decoration. Otherwise, there is a risk of fire. Historical background: in earlier times, when the miner did not see the sun during the dark winter months, lightly played a major role as a symbol of life. Candles were placed in the windows of the miners' rooms to light his way down the shaft. In the Erzgebirge, this developed into the custom of light figures. The fact that not only local motifs were used was due to the influence of the Saxon royal court. Elector Augustus the strong loved the oriental way of life and promoted its art and culture. The craftsmen of the neighbouring Erzgebirge were inspired by this and produced light figures and smoking men with an oriental appearance.
