ARTEK Stackable stool Orange Wood. Dimensions: Ø 38 x H 44 cm. Treat yourself to an iconic ORIGINAL piece that will always retain its value, passing on to the next generation. Designed in 1933 by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976), the ''Stool 60'' is one of the most copied design classics. Present in the collections of the most prestigious museums and sold in millions, it is surely the world's most famous Stool. Since 1933, it has been handcrafted in Finland by ARTEK, which offers a lifetime warranty on every Stool 60! In the 1930s, the Stool 60 symbolized the quintessence of functionalist furniture. At once a stool, a small side table, a bedside table, a storage or display surface, this versatile, lightweight piece of furniture is also stackable to save space. As early as 1927, in close collaboration with cabinetmaker Otto Korhonen, Aalto developed a patented process for bending Solid wooden at a 90° angle which, in 1932, gave rise to the famous Aalto Base (also known as the L-base). A small revolution for an era still dominated by metal work. By inserting sheets of veneer into incisions in each leg, the Birch veneer acquires the flexibility needed to be bent into the desired L-shape. This new wood-bending technique makes it possible, for the first time, to anchor the legs directly under the seat, without the need for any additional frame or structure. It was with these L-shaped legs that the three-legged 60 Stool was designed in 1933. The Stool was used in the auditorium of the Bookcase in Viipuri (now Vyborg, Russia). Once asked to assess his own importance as a designer and architect, Alvar Aalto declared that his greatest achievement was the L-leg, whose importance stemmed from the fact that it solved a very old problem - the attachment of chair and table legs - in a totally new way, the L-leg screwing directly to the seat, without any intermediate pieces, to create a solid structure from the outset. The curves of the legs lend a certain elegance and fluidity to the furniture, making it less austere, despite its apparent simplicity. Originally conceived for the Stool 60, the L-shaped Base, legs have quickly established themselves as a characteristic element of the ARTEK collection: L-shaped legs in different sizes and angles are used in the construction of many stools, chairs, benches and tables in the Artek collection, from the Chair 69 to the Bench 153 and the Table Aalto. All ARTEK bentwooden furniture is manufactured in the Turku factory in Finland, using local wood. They combine modern production methods with skilled craftsmanship and carefully selected materials.
