White Lilac is a tree with great bonsai potential. If left to grow naturally, it reaches 2.5 to 3 feet tall. A small tree that develops deeply furrowed bark with age. This species of lilac produces new shoots that come from the base of the shrub, or from the roots. Is very tolerant of hard pruning which is necessary for growing bonsai. The green heart-shaped leaves are smooth and appear before the flowers bloom. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow-green. The bright purple flowers grow in large clusters, from May to June, and have one of the most powerful scents that come from a plant. Hardiness zones 3-7, (-15 °C, -37 ºC) in winter. GROWING ADVICE These seeds need stratification before planting, i.e. exposed to cold to enter their germination phase. For faster germination, soak the seeds in slightly warm water for 24-48 hours, followed by a month of cold stratification (i.e., put in the salad drawer in the refrigerator for 1 month). before sowing at a depth of 5 mm in sterile garden soil. After 1 month of refrigerator stay, plant the seeds at a depth of 5 mm in slightly moistened seed compost and then drag a plastic bag over the pot. Place the pot in a bright place with a temperature of 20-25°C. Keep the soil moist, not soggy. Keep the pot warm, 20-23 degrees. Germination usually occurs after 2-4 weeks. It can vary greatly depending on the degree of unbroken dormancy. Repot in larger pots or plant outdoors when the weather is frost-free.
