Origins of Ginger Ginger is botanically known as Zingiber officinale, a spice that was considered a luxury 5,000 years ago and is now one of the most common spices utilised in the modern-day. Ginger is a rhizome, believed to have originated in the tropical jungles of Southern Asia. The Ginger we know is the root of the plant, sitting below reed-like fronds that grow to about 1m tall. Ginger is part of the same family as Turmeric - the Curcuma family. Although Ginger originated in Southeast Asia, the root has always been widely cultivated in other areas. Ginger is one of the oldest spices known to man and by the 1st century, Ginger was being cultivated in the Mediterranean regions. The spice gradually became popular in Rome and when the Roman Empire fell, the use of Ginger decreased. At that point, the price of Ginger increased and the root became a novelty ingredient.
