What is Lutein? Lutein is a carotenoid, a substance that provides colour. Lutein is considered a yellow pigment but may appear to be red in high concentrations. There are more than 600 carotenoids that naturally occur in nature, but very few provid health benefits. Lutein is one example of a carotenoid that provides health benefits. Oxford Vitality extracts their Lutein from the marigold plant, specifically the flowers. Marigold flowers were first used by the Aztec people who claimed the flowers had magical properties. The marigold was originally used for the treatment of hiccups, being struck by lightning, and for those who wished to cross water safely. There are two types of marigold; French and African, and both are native to Mexico and Guatemala. The plant may also be known as Tagetes or Calendula. Other natural sources of Lutein include kale, spinach, egg yolk, broccoli, grapes and corn. Benefits of Lutein As there are very few sources of Lutein, many of the population could be deficient in the carotenoid. Lutein has been shown to contribute to the protection of gastric membrane mucosa and support the effective functioning of the digestive system to reduce digestive discomfort.
