The active part of this plant is the leaf, which contains phenolic acids, mainly caffeilquinic acids, among which chlorogenic, cryptochlorogenic, neochlorogenic and cynarin (the main active substance); flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones, among other active compounds.PROPERTIESTraditionally, the artichoke has been used in all processes involved in digestion:Eupeptic action: promotes correct digestion.Choleretic: increases bile production.Cholagogue: promotes the expulsion of bile.Antiemetic: prevents nausea and vomiting.Appetite: promotes the appetite.It has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides (and thus combat the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis).
