Origins of Black Pepper Black Pepper is colloquially known as 'the king of spices' as it is found in the majority of our kitchen cupboards. Black peppercorns were founded in the Kerala State of India, originating from green berries of the Piper nigrum vine. The green berries are harvested and left to ferment and dry in the sun where they begin to resemble the peppercorn we know in our kitchens; shrivelled berries with a brown-black colour. The intense flavour of Black Pepper takes on many adjectives, including biting, hot, pungent, woody and sharp. Benefits of Black Pepper Black Pepper is used to help treat and alleviate many ailments, including improvements to digestive functions and intestinal health. In recent years, the relationship between Black Pepper and bodyweight control has become more prevalent, due to its perceived benefits with digestion. It is believed that Black Pepper stimulates the taste buds when we chew food, indicating to the stomach that food has arrived. This stimulates an increase in gastric secretions of hydrochloric acid in the stomach which improves digestion. Black Pepper is also thought to aid cleansing of the skin by supporting blood circulation through fine blood vessels and capillaries. The Indian spice also contains antimicrobial properties to support the immune system.
