Cascara Sagrada de Sotya is a stimulating laxative, increasing peristalsis of the colon by irritating the mucosa and acting on the nervous system. Cascara sagrada reduces the absorption of fluid and electrolytes, which prevents the stool from becoming excessively dehydrated and resulting in constipation. It is recommended to take 1 or 2 tablets a day, preferably before going to bed. It should not be administered to children under 10 years of age, and to children over 10 years of age, only under medical prescription. In the absence of studies, it is preferable to avoid its use in the first trimester of pregnancy or to use it only under medical supervision. It is also recommended to avoid its use during lactation. In case of chronic use or abuse, it can lead to hypokalemia, causing an electrolyte imbalance that can be aggravated by the use of diuretics. Side effects include spasms and abdominal pain, especially in patients with irritable colon. In case of irritable colon, Crohn's disease, appendicitis, spastic or paralytic ileus, intestinal obstruction, ulcerative colitis, or abdominal pain of unknown origin, consult a doctor.
